What is Girivalam?
Girivalam (also called Giri Pradakshina) is the sacred practice of walking around Arunachala hill in
Tiruvannamalai. The circumambulation path is approximately 14 kilometres long and is lined with ancient
temples, shrines, and sacred tanks. Girivalam is most popular during full moon nights (Pournami), when lakhs
of devotees walk the path barefoot.
Many visitors to Tiruvannamalai come specifically for Girivalam and need accommodation that is conveniently
located for the walk.
Where to Stay for Girivalam
The best location for Girivalam accommodation depends on where you want to start and end your walk:
- Temple area Most Girivalam walkers start from Arunachaleswarar Temple. Staying near the temple makes
it easy to begin and conclude the walk.
- Along the Girivalam path Some properties are located along the circumambulation route
itself. This can be convenient if you prefer to start from a specific point.
- Town centre Properties near the bus stand or main roads offer easy auto-rickshaw access
to the starting point.
Practical Tips for Girivalam Visitors
- Full moon nights These are the most popular times. Book accommodation well in advance
rooms fill up quickly, especially during the day before Pournami.
- Timing Many devotees start Girivalam in the evening and walk through the night. Check-in
and check-out flexibility is useful.
- Rest after the walk A comfortable room with hot water is especially appreciated after a
14-km walk. Consider AC rooms for warm months.
- Footwear While many walk barefoot, carrying light footwear is advisable. Leave valuables
at your accommodation.
- Hydration and food Carry water. Food stalls and shops are available along the Girivalam
path, especially during full moon.
- Season Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day (April-June). Evening or early
morning starts are more comfortable.
Accommodation Budget for Girivalam
Many Girivalam visitors stay for just one night and prefer budget-friendly options. However, family rooms and premium stays are also available for those who want more
comfort.
