Tiruvannamalai experiences a tropical climate, meaning it is generally warm to hot year-round. However, the experience of visiting can change dramatically depending on the season. Here is a breakdown of what to expect.

Winter (November to February) - Peak Season

This is the most pleasant time of year. The mornings and evenings are cool (you might even want a light sweater in December and January), and the daytime sun is warm but not punishing. This is the perfect weather for walking the Girivalam path barefoot or sitting for hours in meditation at Skandashram.

Note: Because the weather is ideal, this is also the most crowded time, especially around the Karthigai Deepam festival in November/December. Room rates are at their highest, and booking in advance is mandatory.

Summer (March to June) - Off-Peak Season

Summer in Tiruvannamalai is fierce. By late April and May, the midday sun makes it almost impossible to walk outside barefoot. The rocks of Arunachala radiate heat. If you visit during this time, your schedule will naturally shift: waking up at 4:30 AM to visit the temple or walk, resting indoors with AC from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and going out again in the evening.

Tip: Ensure you book an Air-Conditioned room if visiting during these months. Non-AC rooms can become uncomfortably hot.

Monsoon (July to October) - The Green Season

Tiruvannamalai receives rain primarily from the Northeast Monsoon, usually peaking in October and November (though occasional showers start in July/August). When it rains, the dust settles, the temperature drops beautifully, and the sacred Arunachala hill turns a vibrant, lush green.

It rarely rains all day; usually, there are heavy downpours in the late afternoon or evening. This is a favorite season for many long-term visitors who enjoy the dramatic skies and the quieter ashram atmosphere before the winter rush begins.
