Tiruvannamalai Railway Station (Station Code: TNM) is a crucial transit hub for pilgrims. While bus transport is more frequent, arriving by train offers a comfortable and scenic journey.

The station is located about 2 kilometers from the main Arunachaleswarar Temple. It is a moderately sized station with basic amenities, including a waiting room, ticket counters, and auto-rickshaws available immediately outside.
Major Train Routes
1. From Chennai to Tiruvannamalai
Traveling from Chennai (usually Chennai Egmore or Tambaram) is very popular. However, direct trains are somewhat limited compared to buses.
- There is a daily passenger/express train that runs on the Chennai-Villupuram-Tiruvannamalai route.
- Alternative: Many travelers take a fast train from Chennai to Villupuram Junction (VM) (which takes about 2.5 hours), and then take a bus or connecting passenger train from Villupuram to Tiruvannamalai (approx. 60 km / 1.5 hours).
2. From Madurai / South Tamil Nadu
Several long-distance express trains connecting Madurai or Tirunelveli to Tirupati or Purulia pass through Tiruvannamalai. These are excellent overnight options.
3. From Bangalore
There are no direct, daily fast trains from Bangalore to Tiruvannamalai. Most visitors from Bangalore prefer taking a direct bus (KSRTC or SETC) which takes about 4 to 5 hours, or driving.

During the monthly Pournami (Full Moon) and the annual Karthigai Deepam festival, the Southern Railway operates numerous "Special Trains" from Chennai, Madurai, and Trichy directly to Tiruvannamalai to handle the massive rush.
Pro Tip: Train tickets for special festival days sell out within minutes on IRCTC. If you cannot get a confirmed train ticket, rely on the TNSTC buses which operate thousands of special services during Pournami.
