Shopping in Tiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai isn't a traditional commercial shopping hub, but it is a treasure trove for spiritual seekers, yogis, and lovers of organic goods. Here is a guide on what you should buy and where to find it.

1. Spiritual Books & Literature

Sri Ramanasramam houses an incredible bookstore right near the entrance. You can buy original translations of Ramana Maharshi's teachings, biographies, and profound texts on Advaita Vedanta. The books are heavily subsidized and incredibly cheap. A must-visit for any reader.

2. Puja Items, Rudraksha & Statues

The streets immediately surrounding the Arunachaleswarar Temple are packed with vendors selling beautifully crafted brass statues, incense (agarbatti), camphor, and Rudraksha malas.

Tip: For high-quality, authentic Rudraksha or Sphatik (crystal) malas, try the established shops on Car Street rather than the street hawkers.

3. Khadi & Organic Cotton Clothing

Due to the large expat and spiritual community, Tiruvannamalai has several boutiques selling highly breathable, organic cotton clothing—perfect for yoga and the hot Tamil Nadu weather. Many shops along Chengham Road (near the ashrams) sell beautiful white kurtas, linen pants, and block-printed dresses.

4. Organic Honey & Ayurvedic Medicine

The Jawadhu Hills (located nearby) are famous for wild forest honey. You can find pure, unadulterated honey in local organic stores. Additionally, there are many Ayurvedic pharmacies (Nattu Marundhu Kadai) selling traditional herbal remedies, pure aloe vera, and natural soaps.
