Meditation in Tiruvannamalai

Beyond the great Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai is a global hub for inner exploration. From silent meditation inside ancient caves to structured Hatha yoga programs, there are countless opportunities to deepen your practice.

Sri Ramanasramam

While not a traditional "school" where you enroll in classes, Sri Ramanasramam is the spiritual epicenter of the town. Devotees practice silent self-inquiry (Advaita Vedanta) in the meditation halls. There is no fee, and you can sit in the Old Hall or by Ramana Maharshi's Samadhi at any time during open hours.

Local Yoga Schools

The area surrounding Ramana Ashram (often called the Ramana Nagar area) is dotted with independent yoga studios. During the peak season (November to March), you will find bulletin boards outside organic cafes advertising:

  • Drop-in Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga classes.
  • Pranayama and Breathwork workshops.
  • Sound Healing and Singing Bowl sessions.

Vipassana Meditation (Dhamma Arunachala)

Just outside of the main town lies a recognized Vipassana meditation center. They offer strictly silent, 10-day residential courses teaching the technique of Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka. These courses are completely free (funded by donations) but require booking months in advance through their official website.
