Travel Guide: Pondicherry & Vellore

How to plan your onward journey from Tiruvannamalai.

Many tourists and spiritual seekers combine their visit to Tiruvannamalai with trips to the coastal French-colonial town of Pondicherry (Puducherry) or the magnificent Golden Temple in Vellore. Here is how to travel between these destinations.

Tiruvannamalai to Pondicherry (Puducherry)

Pondicherry, famous for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville, and beautiful beaches, is located approximately 110 kilometers east of Tiruvannamalai.

  • By Bus: This is the most common and convenient method. Government buses (TNSTC) and private buses run frequently from the Tiruvannamalai Central Bus Stand to Pondicherry. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • By Taxi: Hiring a private taxi is a comfortable option, especially if you are traveling with luggage or a group. The drive takes about 2 hours via the NH77 highway. The cost is usually around ₹2,500 - ₹3,500 depending on the vehicle type.
  • By Train: There is a passenger train route, but it is much slower and less frequent than taking a bus. Bus is highly recommended.

Tiruvannamalai to Vellore (Sripuram Golden Temple)

Vellore, home to the historic Vellore Fort, CMC Hospital, and the stunning Sripuram Golden Temple (covered in real gold foil), is located approximately 85 kilometers north of Tiruvannamalai.

  • By Bus: There is extremely high bus frequency between Tiruvannamalai and Vellore. Buses leave every 15-20 minutes from the bus stand. The journey takes about 2 hours.
  • By Taxi: A taxi to Vellore will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. This is a great option if you want to visit the Golden Temple and return to Tiruvannamalai on the same day.
  • By Train: Similar to Pondicherry, while train routes exist (via Villupuram or direct passenger), buses are far more practical and frequent.

Travel Tip: When taking buses in Tamil Nadu, look for the 'Point-to-Point' or 'Non-Stop' (1 to 1) buses. They skip smaller village stops and will get you to Pondicherry or Vellore much faster than the standard buses.
