Caves of Arunachala

For spiritual seekers visiting Tiruvannamalai, the journey is incomplete without trekking up the sacred Arunachala Hill to visit the caves where Sri Ramana Maharshi spent decades in deep meditation.

Virupaksha Cave

Named after the 13th-century saint Virupaksha Deva, this uniquely shaped cave is where Ramana Maharshi stayed from 1899 to 1916. The cave itself is shaped like the sacred syllable 'Om' and holds a powerful vibration. Visitors can sit inside the inner sanctum where absolute silence is maintained.

How to reach: The easiest path starts from the rear gate of Sri Ramanasramam, winding up the hill for about 30-40 minutes.

Skandashram Cave

Higher up the hill from Virupaksha Cave lies Skandashram, a slightly larger shaded ashram area with trees and a stunning panoramic view of the Arunachaleswarar Temple below. Ramana Maharshi moved here in 1916 and stayed until 1922.

Tips for the trek: The path connects Virupaksha and Skandashram directly. It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk between them. Ensure you carry water, wear a hat, and begin your trek early in the morning before the sun gets too hot.

Important Rules

  • Maintain absolute silence inside and around the caves.
  • Remove your footwear before entering the cave enclosures.
  • Do not feed the monkeys on the trail, as they can become aggressive.
  • Photography is strictly prohibited inside the caves.
