Ashrams in Tiruvannamalai, particularly Sri Ramanasramam and Seshadri Swamigal Ashram, are places of profound silence and spiritual practice. They are not tourist attractions. To ensure you maintain the sanctity of these spaces and respect the devotees meditating there, follow these essential etiquette rules.
The Dress Code (Strictly Enforced)
Both men and women must dress modestly. This is non-negotiable, and you may be denied entry if dressed inappropriately.
- Men: Wear long pants (trousers or dhotis) and shirts with sleeves. Avoid shorts and sleeveless vests.
- Women: Wear sarees, kurtas/churidars with a dupatta (scarf), or long loose pants with a top that fully covers the shoulders and chest. Avoid tight clothing, leggings, shorts, and sleeveless tops.
Silence is Golden
The primary practice at Sri Ramanasramam is silent self-inquiry.
- Do not talk inside the meditation halls (The Old Hall, the Samadhi shrine).
- Turn your mobile phone to completely silent (not vibrate).
- If you must speak with a companion while walking the grounds, do so in a quiet whisper.
Photography Restrictions
While you may take photos of the peacocks, the hill, or the exterior gardens (where permitted), photography is strictly banned inside all meditation halls and shrines. Never take photos of people meditating. Focus on experiencing the place rather than documenting it.
Dining Etiquette (Annadanam)
If you partake in the free meals served at the ashram:
- Sit cross-legged on the floor where directed by volunteers.
- Eat in absolute silence.
- Do not waste food. Only accept what you can eat.
- Wash your own leaf/plate and clean your spot before leaving.
